From Facade to Functional
Talavera de la Reina, Spain 2015
I spent a month in Talavera de la Reina, Spain as an Artist-in-Residence at the Escuela de Arte Talavera. Inspired by my new surroundings, especially the colorful tiles adorning parks and facades, I created sets of plates that create larger patterns when arranged. I specifically drew influence from 17th and 18th century polychrome sobre cubierta, historical pottery from Talavera and Puente, modern Spanish tile composition, and Moorish plaster bas-reliefs at the Alhambra in Granada.
